Lautenberg hasn't had enough
Lautenberg is now 82. He would be 84 at the start of a new term and 90 at the end of it. Someone needs to pull him aside and tell him it's time to give someone else a crack at the job. It might not hurt to remind him what he said about Rep. Millicent Fenwick when he went up against her in his first Senate campaign in 1982: she was too old. She was 72 at the time.
Lautenberg wouldn't be in the Senate today if he hadn't been an 11th-hour ballot replacement for Bob Torricelli. There's good reason to doubt whether he could win in 2008 under the full glare of the media in a long campaign.

Why knock Lautenberg? So many other politicians have been involved in scandals or have had their character questioned. Lautenberg seems to be a respectable fellow. Many people now are living to be 100. If Mr. Lautenberg is still being productive at 82, what's to say he won't be productive at age 90? At least he's doing something with his time and trying to serve the common good, unlike so many people who decide to call it quits at 65 and wallow in mediocrity, simply playing golf and reading cheap paperback novels. We live in a democracy. Let the people decide. If Mr. Lautenberg wants to run, let him. I find it commendable that he still wants to serve.
I don't agree with Sen. Lautenberg's politics, but I respect him for his willingness to work long past retirement age. He is a very wealthy man, who could do nothing if he wanted. Instead he chooses to work. If he wants to try a run in 2008, why not? The voters will decide whether they want him or not.
Maybe we could get Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia to take his place?
What's the difference? The currupt "bosses" of the democratic party will once again fool the people of NJ into voting for Lautenberg or some other lock-step liberal. that's why I can't wait to some day move out of this god forsaken state.
