Taking a (new) toll on taxpayers

Just when you think state officials have run out of ideas on how to take more money out of your pocket, they surprise you. The state Department of Transportation is advertising for an engineering consultant and a traffic and revenue consultant to study turning free highways into toll roads. What a dreadful idea.
Among the roads under consideration are routes 78, 80 and 95, as well as the Pulaski Skyway and portions of Route 440 in Middlesex County.
The biggest outrage here is the money the state will be paying to consultants to study an idea that has zero chance of being implemented. Turning those roads into toll roads would produce the biggest taxpayer revolt since the toilet paper tax.
