Sen. Sweeney's motive

Why is Democratic state Sen. Stephen Sweeney, whose day job is business agent for an ironworkers union, spearheading a campaign to cut state employee salaries and benefits by 15 percent as an alternative to raising the state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent.
This e-mail from Sweeney, sent to us this morning, may explain it:

Some New Jersey political history to consider...

July 1966: Democratic Governor & Democratic Legislature impose sales tax at 3%. Next election: Democrats lose 19 seats in the Assembly

March 1970: Republican Governor & Republican Legislature increase sales tax to 5%. Next election: Republicans lose 20 seats in Assembly

July 1990: Democratic Governor & Democratic Legislature increase sales tax to 7%. Next election: Democrats lose 22 seats in Assembly and 10 seats in the Senate.

July 2006..............

Maybe Mr. Sweeney is the only legislator that finally gets it.
The others don't.

Why is it that legislators in NJ blame everyone but themselves for the massive budget deficit?

THE GRAVY TRAIN IS OVER.

We recommend a government shutdown since the legislators avoid at all costs the words "fiscal responsibility" and "slashing government waste."

Their words - not ours. "... New Jersey has a spending problem - NOT a revenue problem."

Instead of pointing fingers, the legislators should look in the mirror.

Sweeney's motive may be for the Democrats to keep control of the statehouse, but he's still right.

The Govenor has demonstrated, literally, that he is more concerned with the unions than he is with the taxpayers.

I hope that the legislators on both sides of the aisle have the fortitude to stand up to the Govenor and his ex-girlfriend. Speaker Roberts should embrace Assmebly Mallone's budget. If that budget passes with a unanimous vote, what would Codey's Senate do?

Let's see the legislature give the Govenor a budget that really cuts spending, and do it with a veto proof majority. Corzine would be a lame duck 6 months into is administration.

For all too long the battle over what is best for the people of New Jersey has been left in the hands of 40 State Senators and 80 State Assembly members. These numbers break from Governor to Governor into what Republicans want and what Democrats want. New Jersey is abused based solely on the desires of two parties and 120 people. Every one knows spending more is wrong. However Jon Corzine has 22 democrat Senators all vying for positions of power and they will eventually side with him. Being that there are only 18 Republicans. The people once again will be short changed. What is desperately needed in New Jersey is a change in that breakdown. We need to hit back in November 2007! Instead of the split, Minority, Majority in the upper & lower House, we need a new breed of elected official in Trenton. We need to call for and promote more Independent candidates and the best scenario for New Jersey would be for the combined 40 Members of the Senate to break down to 13 Democrats, 13 Republicans and 14 Independents. This way the powerful will have to play to the people instead of their parties.

On July first I am starting an organization dedicated to recruiting and supporting such an effort. The heart of New Jersey is beating for a major change. Send those in office who oppose the will of the people flowers in November 2007, but don't send them back to Trenton.

Maybe all of you didn't notice that both the Democrats and the Republicans both raised taxes when they were put in office? Two different parties .....same result?
