No horse sense in Asbury Park

The Asbury Park Police Department says it hopes to have a mounted police patrol in place by October. It plans to send officers to an eight-week training course with the Newark Police Department to learn the ropes.
Police Chief Mark Kinmon noted in a story in today's Press that there are no other departments in Monmouth County with a mounted unit. There's probably a good reason for that: they aren't needed, they aren't cheap and they aren't practical.
Kinmon says a mounted unit would be good P.R. and it would be an effective crime deterrent because it would allow officers to see for several blocks while sitting high in the saddle. If that's the goal, why not equip officers with a pair of stilts? It would raise their eye levels and it would delight the kids.
When I think of police on horseback, I think of "Bloody Sunday" in Selma, Ala., in 1965 and the 1968 Chicago Democratic National Convention, when mounted cops beat back anti-war protesters. Mounted police in Asbury Park? Why?
Asbury Park has many law enforcement needs. Cops on horseback isn't one of them.

I don't know the answer, but what costs more to keep over its lifespan, a police car or a horse?

With insurance costs and gas at $3.00, i'm thinking the horse is gotta be cheaper.

Terrorists use the internet to communicate their message. We should ban the internet. Poor logic.

we have to be open to ideas. Perhaps this might be being younger children closer to the cops on horses. I think this is a good idea. Asbury, don't listen to Randy, he's and arm chair cop.

The Red Bank PD could haved used some cops on horseback this past July 3rd when they hosted their annual fireworks show over the Navesink River. There must have been 100,000 people jammed into downtown Red Bank at that time.

That said, and in all fairness to the RBPD, they did a great job this year, albeit with some help from cops from a few other police departments.

Mounted Police are a great tool for law enforcement. The majority of the population will not "test" a horse. Horses are intimidating. Which is more effective 3 6ft. cops or 2 10ft tall cops on horses? Let them try and run too, i think we know who is gonna win that race. No body asks a cop to pet his car or motorcycle. 1 mounted cop is equal to 3 foot cops for crowd control.

Public Relations
Visibility
Strong Police Presence
Crowd Control

The proof is in the pudding!
